York Art Here, May 15 to June 30, 2005
Your Art Here co-founders Shana Berger and Nathan Purath worked with students and teachers in the public and private schools in York, AL to make art for display on local billboards. After studying the art of Romare Bearden, a collage artist who made work about his community during the Harlem Renaissance, the students were asked to identify important aspects of their communities. The students made drawings based on these ideas, and Berger and Purath then digitally collaged all of the drawings into pieces that were printed on vinyl and are now displayed on billboards in York, Alabama. The project was made possible by the City of York, the municipalWORKSHOP, the Alabama Power Foundation, the Alabama State Council on the Arts, and the Coleman Center for Arts and Culture.
